The Environmental Conservation Department has a comprehensive waste reduction program for the removal of solid waste from residential homes in the Town of Yorktown. The following categories of solid waste are collected on pre-designated days from residential homes: Kitchen Trash -- twice (2) per week; Recyclables -- once (1) per week; Bulk Trash -- four (4) times per season (note: two collections for apartments & condos); Leaf Bags -- nine (9) times per autumn season.
In February an updated "Guide to Recycling & Solid Waste Disposal Services" booklet is mailed to each home. Find your collection schedule along with rules & regulations for the services listed on this page in the "Guide." In addition, information and the location of depots for recycling organic yard waste; textiles; used motor oil & antifreeze; rechargable household batteries; cell phones and household chemicals are listed.
Call the office with questions or if you cannot find your schedule for collections (914) 245-4438.
In an effort to keep the roadsides of Yorktown free of litter, the following programs are available:
Battle of Yorktown and Adopt-A-Road.
THE BATTLE OF YORKTOWN
Saturday, April 19, 2008
In recognition of Earth Day, residents are encouraged to pick up litter along roadsides, shopping areas, lakes and parks in the Town of Yorktown. The Battle of Yorktown is what we call this annual event and we are always looking for new recruits! Groups and individuals of all ages are encouraged to participate.
If you want more information about the clean-up, please call 245-4438, email Kima@yorktownny.org, or stop by the office. It's important that we register and assign your group to clean a specific area then give you plenty of bright orange litter bags and safety vests. The hamlets in the Town of Yorktown: Crompond, Croton Heights, Huntersville, Jefferson Valley, Kitchawan, Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, Sparkle Lake, Teatown and Yorktown Heights will be cleaner & greener because of your efforts.
*The roadsides of Yorktown got a much needed cleaning when 527 volunteers in 109 groups waged a war against litter on Saturday, April 14, 2007. Later that day, the 24.5 tons of litter & debris picked up by the volunteers was disposed of by the crews in the Environmental Conservation Department. Thank you for a cleaner & greener community!
Yorktown's Adopt-A-Road
If your organization or business is interested in keeping litter off of Yorktown's roadsides year-round, you can Adopt-A-Road. In exchange for your group's effort, a sign with the name of your organization will be posted on your adopted roadside. To date 30 roadways have been adopted, yet we have so many more!
If you are interested, please call (914) 245-4438 for more information.
