It is Arbor Day time of year again, and we are happily planning this year's event, which will take place on Friday, May 4th at 3:30 pm. The ceremony will be held in the Patriot Garden off the parking lot at Yorktown Town Hall, 363 Underhill Avenue.
Last year the children's participation was far and away the highlight of the ceremony, and we are hoping to have similar and expanded participation this year.
Our project focus will be design for flags to be hung from the light poles around Yorktown. The design can be an image, poetry or prose, or any combination of the three, but must be two dimensional. Submissions can be from an individual or a team. Remember winning submissions will be made into flags that need to be clearly visible to passing cars.
The finished dimensions of the flags will be 36” x 24” and be attached to the poles through rivets located on the left side of each flag.
The winning designs created this year will be translated into flags next year, and then into eco-friendly products like shopping/tote bags following Arbor Day to be sold to benefit the tree fund in Yorktown.
We are hoping to have several categories of participation: Yorktown school children (Grade 5), Boy and Girl Scouts whose troops are in based in the Town of Yorktown, high school students (Grade 10) and senior clubs.
Winners will be chosen from each group.
The number of winners per group will depend on the number of entries.
Winners will have a tree planted at their school or meeting site, as well as receiving a tree for themselves and a certificate from the Town.
All entries must clearly indicate the full name, age, address, and phone number of the artist/author.
