Press release date: Tue Oct 11th, 2011

Grand Opening Of The Hunter Brook Preserve Quest
Sunday, October 23, 12 – 2 p.m. at Hunter Brook, Yorktown

Join the Westchester Land Trust for the Grand Opening of the Hunter Brook Preserve Quest on Sunday, October 23, 12 – 2 p.m. Hunter Brook is located in Yorktown. Questing is an outdoor exploration that combines a treasure hunt with fun fact finding related to history and the natural environment. It’s a great way for children and families to enjoy the outdoors. This Quest focuses on the importance of wetlands and how Hunter Brook supplies drinking water for the residents of New York City. Completion of the Quest will take about 45 minutes and prizes will be awarded for completion.

The Hunter Brook Quest was created by Blaze Jones-Yellin, a Westchester Land Trust (WLT) summer intern from Cornell University. After the opening day, the Quest will be a permanent fixture on the preserve. Families can visit the preserve any time during daylight hours, pick up a Quest booklet at the Quest box, and head off to start an adventure!

Hunter Brook Preserve was donated to WLT in 2000 by Wilder-Balter Partners, the developer of the adjacent subdivision. We ensure that the preserve will forever remain in its natural state. This promise is supported by a conservation easement that was granted to Yorktown Land Trust and the Town of Yorktown. Many generous volunteers and supporters have helped maintain and preserve Hunter Brook, including volunteers from Coldwell Banker, Pepsi Beverage Company and Ernst & Young. The Watershed Agricultural Council provided shrubs and native plantings.

Directions: The Preserve is on the west side of Beekman Court, off Hunter Brook Road in Yorktown. A preserve sign is at the entrance of the preserve. Street parking is 100 feet further up the road. Enter at the preserve sign; head down the hill and follow path to the right. You will see the Quest box near the bridge on your left.

WLT has five Quests on its preserves to engage visitors in using their creativity and skills in navigation, listening, and observation. WLT’s other Quests are at the Frederick P. Rose Preserve, Cross River; Westchester Wilderness Walk, Zofnass Family Preserve, Pound Ridge; John Jay Homestead, Katonah; and Bedford Audubon’s Bylane Farm, Katonah.

Founded in 1988, Westchester Land Trust has helped preserve more than 7,500 acres in 28 communities. Its mission is to preserve land in partnership with private property owners; help communities create new parks and preserves; and foster sound land use planning.
