As of January 1, 2006, the term of office of the Highway Superintendent, an elected position, is four (4) years.
The basic responsibilities of the Highway Department are:

To maintain in a passable, safe manner all Town roads & bridges.

To clear all roads of winter snow and ice. Includes those County roads in the Town of Yorktown.

Repair road damages caused by winter ravages, including caved-in basins, raised culvert pipe, general road break-up.

Install drain pipes where needed and clean same when blocked up.

Clean catch basins of debris.

Maintenance of trees on Town property and cutting back or trimming back for sight distance.

Installations of signs: stop, yield, etc., and street name signs.

Maintenance of all Highway vehicles and equipment.

Answering taxpayer complaints pertaining to roads and drainage.

Prepare annual budget for submission to the Town Board.
