GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Performs skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance of all types of motor equipment (gasoline or diesel self-propelled and non-self-propelled engine equipment); does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

Under the general supervision of a higher level employee, the incumbent of this class is responsible for a wide variety of repairs and maintenance work of all types of automotive equipment, including heavy equipment vehicles. e.g. , tractor trailers, bulldozers, sweepers, etc. The Senior Automotive Mechanic is responsible for carrying out a preventative maintenance program on municipal vehicles and for the required maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled equipment in the field. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative Only)

Performs major and minor mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs on automotive and heavy
equipment vehicles;

Removes and repairs gasoline or diesel (internal) combustion engines, including crankshaft,
pistons, pins, bearings and fuel, cooling and exhaust systems;

Assembles and times engines;

Removes, overhauls and repairs brakes, final drives, transmissions, torque converters and
accessories;

Operates valve grinders, drill press, lathe, welding and burning equipment and other associated
tools;

Removes and adjusts carburetors, distributors;

Maintains and repairs cars and emergency vehicles, bulldozers, tractor-trailers payloaders,
sweepers, snowplow, road rollers, compacting stationery equipment and machines;

Instructs equipment operators and others in performance of scheduled preventive maintenance
on their assigned equipment;

Maintains an equipment parts inventory, orders parts as needed and keeps equipment and
inventory records;

May supervise subordinate employees in the performance of the job; May perform automotive inspections, as required.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES:

Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques, and terminology associated with the automotive and heavy equipment mechanics trade; good knowledge of the accident and safety precautions of the trade; demonstrated ability to perform difficult repairs on all types of automobile and heavy equipment vehicles; ability to diagnose mechanical difficulties readily; skill in operating front-end repair equipment and shop-testing equipment for ignition, carburetors, et al; ability to read and understand technical drawings, shop prints, mechanical curve charts, etc.; ability to work from oral or written instructions and without instructions from own diagnosis; ability to lay out, organize and plan the work of others; good interpersonal skills; physical strength and agility;
physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from a high school or automotive trade school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five years of experience where the primary function involved both automotive and equipment maintenance and repair work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State, appropriate for the type of equipment to be operated.
