Volunteer Boards & Committees

Boards and Committees fulfill an important role in Town government by evaluating issues which affect our community and making recommendations to the Town Board for needed action. Although most Boards/Commissions are advisory in nature, a few are decision-making entities. The value of these bodies is a direct reflection of the interest and dedication of our citizens in making Yorktown a better place to live, and we encourage you to apply for appointment to any Board/Commission in which you may be interested. Contact the Supervisor's Office to apply for an appointment.  The Town of Yorktown's Boards and Commissions are described below.

Advanced Life Support Commission (ALS)

  • Members: YVAC representative, EMT-I representative, and a Town Board Member
  • Meets the first Wednesday of every month in the Yorktown Community & Cultural Center in Room 222.
  • The Advanced Life Support Commission oversees the Town of Yorktown Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedic program.

Advisory Board on Architecture & Community Appearance (ABACA)

  • 7 members & 2 alternate members, 3 year terms
  • Members shall be:
    • Specifically qualified by reson of training or experience in architecture, land development, city planning, real estate, landscape architecture or other relevant business or profession or by reason of civic interest and sound judgment to judge the effects of a proposed building or land development upon the desirability, property values and development of surrounding areas.
    • At least one member of the Board shall be a registered architect in the State of New York.
  • Meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month and begin at 8:00 pm.
  • The Board reviews all site plan and subdivision applications to provide guidance in the architectural design of proposed developments. The ABACA also reviews commercial sign permit applications to maintain consistent, high quality, character enhancing signage is placed throughout town.

Advisory Committee on Open Space (ACOS) (4 Seats Available)

  • 9 members, 3 year terms
  • Meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm in the Town Hall Conference Room.
  • The Advisory Committee on Open Space (ACOS) is a multi-disciplinary committee which assists and advises the Town Board and Planning Board in carrying out the goals of the Town's Comprehensive Plan, and in functioning as the Town's Open Space ombudsmen. The ACOS is to identify open space opportunities, form tactical plans to preserve open space, and, in conjunction with the Conservation Board, coordinate the Town's implementation activities.

Assessment Review Board

  • 5 members, 5 year terms
  • Meets on Grievance Day, the third Tuesday in June, each year.
  • The Board of Assessment Review reviews complaints against tentative property assessment values.

Board of Ethics

  • 5 members, 5 year terms (1 Seat Available)
    • The Town Attorney shall be a nonvoting member ex officio of the Board of Ethics and upon request of the Board shall render advice and help in the administrstion of the Code.
  • Meetings are held on as needed basis at Town Hall.
  • The Board of Ethics renders advisory opinions on specific situations or when requested, on the conduct of an official or employee, in accordance with the provisions of the adopted Code of Ethics.

Bureau of Fire Prevention

  • Members are representatives from each of the fire districts, the Building Inspector, Fire Inspector, a representative from the Yorktown Police Department, and the Water Superintendent.
  • Meets as needed on the third Monday of the month at 7:30 pm , location alternates between the Locksley Rd Firehouse & Jefferson Valley Firehouse.
  • Pursuant to Section §130-3 of the Town Code, the function of the Bureau of Fire Prevention is to assist the Fire Inspector in the review of site plans and subdivision plans for the purposes of addressing safety concerns of the the general public, and the needs of emergency services, and to act as an interface between the Town of Yorktown and the respective fire districts within its boundaries.

Cable TV Committee (2 Seats Available)

  • 7 members, 5 year terms
  • Meets as needed on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm in Town Hall. 
  • The Cable TV Committee oversees the Town's cable contract.

Community Housing Board (3 Seats Available)

  • 9 members, 5 year terms
  • Meets the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm in the Yorktown Community & Cultural Center, Room 223.
  • The Community Housing Board looks at existing housing in the Town and determines whether or not grant funds for the rehabilitation of the housing are available. The Board also reviews the Town's balance in its various housing offerings including: the number of rental units in the community, accessory apartments, straight market rentals, senior rentals, and number and location of startup homes.

Conservation Board (1 Seat Available)

  • 9 members, 3 year terms
  • Meets the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 7:30 pm in Town Hall. 
  • The Conservation Board's primary responsibility is protecting the Town's natural resources during land use review and the application of Chapter 178 of the Town code, issuance of Wetland Permits, and Chapter 165, Erosion and Sedimentation Permits. The Conservation Board also reviews major land use applications and offers comments on erosion control and stormwater management.

Energy Advisory Committee

  • All interested may join
  • Meets the third Thursday of every month as needed at 7:30 pm in the Town Hall Conference Room.
  • The Yorktown Energy Advisory Committee is charged with drafting, recommending, and ultimately helping to implement a comprehensive energy plan for the Town of Yorktown.

Landmarks Preservation Commission

  • 5 members & 2 alternate members, 3 year terms
  • To the extent available in the community, members shall be:
    • At least one shall be an architect experienced in working with historic buildings
    • At least one shall be a historian
    • At least one shall have demonstrated significant interest in and commitment to the field of historic preservation evidenced wither by involvement in a local historic group, emplyment or volunteer activity in the filed of historic preservation, or other serious interest in the field
    • All members shall have a known interest in historic preservation and architectural development within the Town of Yorktown.
  • Meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm in the Yorktown Community & Cultural Center, Room 209.
  • The Commission identifies historic landmarks in town and works to create a public awareness of these landmarks. In addition, the Commission reviews applications for historic landmarks and grants Certificates of Approriateness to permit alteration of designated landmark or landmark sites.

Planning Board

  • 5 members & 1 alternate member, 5 year terms
  • Meets the second and fourth Mondays of the month at 7:30 pm alternating between Town Hall and the Yorktown Community & Cultural Center Room 104. 
  • The Planning board is responsible for insuring development is executed in accordance with the Town's Comprehensive Plan which guides development and patterns throughout the Town.

Recreation Commission

  • 7 members & 1 alternate member, 7 year terms
  • Meets the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm in Town Hall. 
  • It is a policy making group and is basically autonomous except for fiscal policy which remains in the hands of the Town Board. The Commission directly supervises the Superintendent of Parks & Recreation.

Senior Citizens Advisory Committee

  • 5 members
  • Meets as needed.
  • Advises the Town Board on matters concerning senior citizens.

Town Board

  • 5 members, 4 year terms
  • Meets for regular meetings every first and third Tuesdays and work session meetings every second and fourth Tuesday of the month in Town Hall. See agendas for start times.

Tree Conservation Advisory Commission (TCAC) (1 Seat Available)

  • 5 members & 1 alternate member, 3 year terms
  • Meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in Town Hall.
  • For the purposes of the management and conservation of the Town-wide forest in the Town, it is necessary to create a Tree Conservation Advisory Commission to advise the Town Board, Conservation Board and Planning Board in carrying out the goals of the Comprehensive Zoning Plan with respect to tree conservation and to function as the Town’s community forest ombudsmen, including but not limited to providing education and outreach programs to the public.

Utilities Oversight Committee

  • 5 members, 3 year terms
  • Meets as needed.
  • Assist the Town with monitoring, reviewing and addressing the environmental impacts of utilities on the Town of Yorktown.

Zoning Board of Appeals (1 Seat Available)

  • 5 members & 1 alternate, 5 year terms
  • Meets the fourth Thursday of every month at 6:30 pm.
  • The Zoning Board of Appeals is an administrative board with the discretionary power to vary the strict application of local zoning regulations in particular cases of difficulty of hardship. The Zoning Board also makes the final determination as to all questions involving interpretation of the zoning ordinance.
