New Downing Park Playground Ribbon Cutting

On Friday, June 19th, the Town of Yorktown held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the newly renovated Downing Park Playground. Construction of the new accessible, inclusive play area was made possible by a generous donation from The Gilbert Beaver Conference Farm. The new playground features drum, chime and horn panels, a garden arch, cruise line, cozy cocoon and sky tower. This playground is a new opportunity not just for kid with disabilities, but also their parents.

Of course none of this would have been possible without the creativity, enthusiasm and determination of our parks and recreation team. The Parks Department did a fabulous job showcasing their talents throughout construction from tree work and landscaping to drainage, fencing, and finishing touches. Every member of the Parks Department was involved in one way or another during this project to create a beautifully renovated asset to the community. The Highway and Water Departments also lent a hand whenever needed. We would also like to thank Raymond Michael from Playworld Systems for his patience, design and redesign work as well as the installation of this incredible playground equipment.

Recreation Commissioner Richard Huffield served on the Commission from 1993 to 2006 when he passed away. His dream was that one day this park would have an accessible, inclusive playground where children of all abilities could play together.  A place where no one sits on the sidelines and feels left out, and today his dream has become a reality as we dedicate this play area in his memory. We hope that everyone continues to enjoy this playground for years to come!
