The Consolidated Water District of the Town of Yorktown, in existence since January 1, 1970, services approximately 10,000 accounts. The main sources of water are the Amawalk Reservoir and the New York City Aqueduct from the Catskills.
The County Board of Health, Westchester County, and the Yorktown Water Department test the water daily and the water is treated at the Amawalk Filtration Plant by the Northern Westchester Joint Water Works.
In addition, the Water District not only maintains the system for distribution and supply, but installs and reads meters, does the billing, installs new pipes and repairs water main breaks.
The Town of Yorktown is also part of the Northern Westchester Joint Water Works (NWJWW) as part of the Federal requirements of the Clean Water Act. The Town, as part of the Joint Water Works, has constructed a new filtration plant for the waters coming out of the Catskill Aqueduct. The plant is located on Route 6, between the Bear Mountain Parkway and Locust Avenue. The Northern Westchester Joint Water Works is a collaboration between the Towns of Yorktown, Somers & Cortlandt, along with the Montrose Improvement District. For more questions, contact the NWJWW directly at (914) 737-5380.
