COVID-19 Update for April 8th

From the Desk of Supervisor Matt Slater
COVID-19 Update: 4/8/20

Today’s numbers are as follows:
Yorktown – 230 (+22)
Westchester – 15,887 (+2,647)
New York State – 149,316 (+10,453)

Our website continues to be a hub of information and I encourage all of our residents to check it regularly for updates and new information.

In addition, be sure to take advantage of the COVID-19 Resource Guide created by our friends at Alliance for Safe Kids.

Last night we welcomed County Executive George Latimer, County Legislator Colin Smith, County Legislator Vedat Gashi and Councilwoman Alice Roker via Zoom.  County Executive Latimer provided a detailed update explaining the statistics and actions our County Government is undertaking.  This includes transforming the Westchester County Center into a field hospital with an additional 100 beds that is expected to be operational by mid-April.

Flags remain at half-staff at Town facilities to honor our neighbors who have fallen victim to COVID-19.  As announced last night, we believe that number to be at least six but no official notice has been given to the Town.

The Organic Yard Waste Facility located on Greenwood Street will be closed for the weekend (Friday 4/11 & Saturday 4/12).

Through two public private partnerships Yorktown’s first responders received much needed equipment including masks today.  This included the Yorktown Police Department, Mohegan Lake Fire Department, Mohegan Volunteer Ambulance Corps., Yorktown Volunteer Fire Department and the Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.  All items were donated by generous members of our community which continues to highlight The Yorktown Way!

My office has received many inquiries about ways to support our local food pantries.  Throughout the year, but especially during times like these, our food pantries play a pivotal role in our community.  All of our local food pantries remain active collecting nonperishable donations as well as monetary donations.  For anyone with specific questions on the best ways to support these vital organizations please contact my office.

Lastly, the Yorktown tax deadline remains April 30th.  We are asking all residents who are able to pay their taxes to please do so.  The Westchester County Board of Legislators, as explained during last night’s update, will potentially be taking action next week to reduce late penalties and fees.  However, due to the complicated tax collection system in place, the Town of Yorktown will still need to send Westchester County $12,000,000 on May 25th because the towns are charged with the collection and disbursement of taxes.  Therefore, it is critically important that those who can pay their taxes do so to ensure Yorktown remains on fiscally stable ground.

Happy Passover to all who are celebrating tonight.  We will provide an update from Town Hall tomorrow night at 6 PM with Dr. Michael Ford of the Hudson Valley Hospital Center as well as Yorktown Chamber of Commerce President Sergio Esposito.
