March 25, 2020 COVID-19 Update

From the Desk of Yorktown Supervisor Matt Slater:

03/25/20 - Yorktown’s confirmed COVID-19 number remains at 30. Therefore, I will not be providing a live update tonight. It is important to note that this is not real time information. The data is expected to be upwards of 72 hours behind. Therefore, it is safe to assume the true number could be significantly greater which is why Town government continues to urge residents to adhere to New York on PAUSE as well as our local restrictions.

Several residents contacted me today about a Yorktown testing site. So far we do not have a mobile testing site in Yorktown. There are many frustrations that we continue to raise with our partners in government about the delays people are experiencing when trying to get the necessary tests. I have spoken with the Governor’s Office and County Executive Latimer about potential sites should mobile testing become available including FDR Park.

For those who heard the Governor earlier today we are far from the reaching the apex of the curve which is estimated to be 21 days away. New York remains the epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis with more than 30,000 cases.

Since it is unclear when we can expect life to be back to normal Town government is preparing to implement State approved mechanisms, such as Zoom, to allow for our boards to begin meeting next month. Town Clerk Quast and her staff are leading the charge to get this important aspect up and running.

In addition, I began the process of forming a Task Force today with a focus on jumpstarting our local economy. We had a very productive conversation this morning with both the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce and Yorktown Small Business Association. As a reminder for all residents to sign the Take-Out-Pledge and support our local restaurants/eateries which can be found on the Town’s website.

We have received several questions pertaining to landscaping companies. On today’s call with municipal leaders and County Executive Latimer it was shared that basic maintenance is allowed. This does include the application of pesticides and herbicides.

Finally, the stress this ongoing situation is putting on individuals and families is intense. I applaud our partners on the county and state levels who are making resources accessible. The Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health is providing an informational, support and referral hotline at (914)995-19000 or text (914) 461-7281. This service is available daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Please continue to monitor the Town’s website (https://www.yorktownny.org/yorktowns-coronavirus-updates) which is constantly updated with new information. If there is new, validated and accurate information specific to Yorktown I will present as I have consistently done using all possible methods of communication.

If anyone has a specific question please don’t hesitate to contact me at 914-962-5722 ext. 200 or mslater@yorktownny.org.

As always, stay safe, stay healthy and stay home!
