Proposed 2023 Yorktown Budget Cuts Taxes, Preserves Services

2023 Budget Presentation

(October 27, 2022) – Supervisor Matt Slater proposed a 2023 budget today that reduces taxes while enhancing public safety.

“This year’s budget proposal will reduce both the Town’s Tax Levy and Tax Rate for the second time in the past three years,” said Supervisor Slater. “The proposed 2023 budget will also allow us to invest in our Police Department by hiring an additional officer specifically to expand our Traffic Unit.

Under the proposed $65.4 million budget, the average home assessed at $10,000 would see a decrease in their town tax rate of approximately $25.59. The Town’s 23 special taxing districts, which include specific parks and sewer districts, either remained flat or saw slight decreases.

Town taxes, which fund the general operating budget including the library and highway department, make up 12% of the total property tax bill. Other portions of the tax bill include refuse and recycling service, fire and EMS and water.

“This year’s budget proposal once again respects local taxpayers, combats the inflation crisis and maintains Yorktown’s strong fiscal health,” said Supervisor Slater.

Like municipalities across the nation, rising costs have hit Yorktown with significant increases in essential operational items such as diesel gasoline, road salt and construction material. Workforce healthcare costs are expected to spike by more than 20% and the lowest bid the Town received to maintain garbage and recycling service grew by $1,500,000 after the current hauler proposed doubling the rate by $2,000,000. The 2023 contract will ultimately cost members of the refuse district $1,500,000 less over the first five years as compared to the first proposal and $2,500,000 less if the contract extends the full eight years.

“The future for our community is filled with immense potential. We have greatness on the horizon with more projects planned, like the facelift to the police and courthouse plaza, improvements to our parks and enhancements to our roads. There is no doubt Yorktown will continue to shine as a regional leader,” said Supervisor Slater.
