Hazardous Material Disposal

County Hazardous Material Recovery Facility

CHEMICALS & TRASH DO NOT MIX!

When tossed into the garbage, chemicals may injure sanitation workers, react on the truck or pollute the air when incinerated.  To insure proper disposal refer to the link for the location of Westchester County's Household Material Recovery Facility (H-MRF).

There is no charge for Yorktown residents to drop their eligible materials off, but you must schedule an appointment by calling (914) 813-5425 or http://environment.westchestergov.com/recycling.

REFRIGERATORS/FREEZERS:

In compliance with the Clean Air Act Amendment, the Town of Yorktown meets safe disposal requirements and ensures proper removal of refrigerants (freon) from appliances collected by the Town for disposal.

CAR TIRES

Up to four(4) tires per household can be dropped off at Westchester County's Household Material Recovery Facility (H-MRF) by appointment. Please call the H-MRF at (914) 813-5425 to schedule an appointment.

Car Tires can also be dropped off at the Refuse and Recycling Department on pre-scheduled "Drop Off Days for E-Waste, Textiles & Car Tires". A $5 per tire fee must be paid in the Refuse and Recycling office prior to drop-off. Please see the "Drop Off Days" tab for drop off dates.

USED MOTOR OIL

Five (5) gallons of USED MOTOR OIL will be accepted from residents at Yorktown's Highway and Central garages, Monday - Friday; 7:00 am - 2:00 pm (excluding Town holidays).  The used motor oil is poured into a self-feeding used-oil tank to heat the Highway and Central garages.

NOTE: bring automotive fluids such as antifreeze and gasoline to Westchester County's Household Material Recovery Facility(H-MRF).

DEPOTS FOR RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES

Nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries contain toxins.  Please ensure that rechargeable batteries be recycled by bringing them to the:

Refuse & Recycling Department
2279 Crompond Road
Yorktown Heights, NY 10598

In accordance with the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation, dispose alkaline & carbon zinc batteries in your household trash.

RECYCLE CELL PHONES

Drop-off old cell phones (regardless of wireless carrier) to Yorktown's Refuse & Recycling Office. Questions? Call Westchester County's Recycling Office (914) 813-5441.

DISPOSE EXPIRED & UNUSED MEDICINE

Keep prescription medicine away from our children and out of our water supply!  Bring expired or unused medications to the receptacle located inside the lobby at the Yorktown Police Department, 2281 Crompond Road.  Items accepted include prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, samples, and medications for pets.  No appointment necessary – open 24 hours, every day. Questions? Call (914) 962-4141.

DISPOSE MEDICAL SHARPS - SAFELY

The best way to protect trash haulers from improperly discarded medical waste is to contain used syringes, needles and lancers in a puncture-proof plastic container with a tight-fitting screw top.  A plastic soda bottle or bleach bottle is good.  Dispose the sealed container in with your kitchen trash; never put the sharps container in a recycling bin. For additional information, please click on the following link: Medical Sharps Disposal.

Radiological Medication residuals should NOT be disposed of in the trash:

If you or your pets are receiving medical treatment involving radioactive materials, all personal items that absorb body fluids should be returned to the health care facility where the treatment was administered, for proper disposal.  If you have questions call the Westchester County Health Department (914) 813-5000.
