Yorktown Appoints Junior Supervisor in Response to Bullying

(July 7, 2022) – The Town Board appointed Riley Manning-Burns as the Town’s junior supervisor for the month of July in response to a bullying incident at the new adaptive playground at Granite Knolls Park.

“It was really important for us to recognize Riley and to make sure that people understand that this town is a place for everybody,” Supervisor Matt Slater said on Tuesday during the Town Board’s meeting.

Manning-Burns, who has Down syndrome, was playing in the new playground that opened on June 18 when he was harassed by other children. The playground is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and is the Town’s first inclusive playground for children of all abilities.

“My granddaughter had the same thing happen to her up there,” said Councilman Tom Diana. “The theme of that park is ‘A place for everyone.’ It shouldn’t have to be stressed.”

In response to the bullying incidents, the Town Board asked the parks department to hang anti-bullying banners at Granite Knolls and other large parks frequented by children.

“Having Riley here is a symbol of bravery for Riley and for everyone,” said Councilwoman Luciana Haughwout.

The Town Board gave Manning-Burns a municipal pin, a flag, a certificate proclaiming him junior supervisor and a Batman toy. Several Town Board members stressed the importance of parents teaching their children proper behavior towards others.

“It starts back at the house, around the dinner table,” said Councilman Sergio Esposito.
