Yorktown Appoints Waterfront Committee

The Town Board appointed five residents to the new Local Waterfront Revitalization Committee.

The Town Board named Dina Aversano chair of the committee. Matthew Talbert, Stewart Glass, Bernard Molloy and Ken Belfer will serve as members. All five volunteers will serve terms through December 31, 2022.

“We welcome the five committee members and look forward to the valuable work they will do in helping our community formulate an action plan to preserve, enhance and protect our waterfronts,” said Supervisor Matt Slater.

The Town Board voted to create the advisory committee in January to support natural waterfronts and waterways. All committee meetings will be public, and members of the public will be permitted to participate in the committee’s discussions. The committee’s meeting dates will be posted on the Town’s website.

"It is an honor and privilege to serve the Town and work together in keeping Yorktown the great community that it is by enhancing its waterways,” said Aversano.

The committee is required to submit an annual report by January 31 that includes meeting dates; votes taken; memoranda submitted to the Town Board; all committee activities; and all meeting minutes.

“It is great that we are moving forward with the waterfront revitalization committee,” said Councilman Ed Lachterman. “Yorktown has such beautiful lakes that used to be a large part of growing up in town. This is the first step towards bringing back our waterfronts for our children to enjoy.”

Many of Yorktown’s waterbodies were added to New York’s inland waterway list over the past five years. The inland-waterway designation qualifies Yorktown to explore and implement Local Waterfront Revitalization Plans. The initial focus will be on Mohegan Lake, Osceola Lake, Junior Lake and Sparkle Lake.

“I would like to thank all the individuals who stepped up to the plate to get involved with the waterfront committee,” said Councilman Tom Diana. “Folks like these make a real difference in our town.”
