Yorktown Buys First Hybrid Police Interceptor

The Yorktown Police Department has received its first hybrid Ford Police Interceptor vehicle.

The purchase is the latest effort to reduce Yorktown’s carbon footprint. According to Ford, a 2021 standard HEV AWD Police Interceptor conserves an estimated 343 gallons of fuel annually when compared to a 2018 non-hybrid Police Interceptor.

“I am pleased that the Yorktown Police Department can play a role in our community’s green future without compromising public safety. This vehicle has state-of-the-art policing technology that runs on a lithium-ion battery, which will enhance our air quality,” said Chief Robert Noble.

The majority of police vehicles consume the greatest amount of fuel while idling. The hybrid configuration allows the engine to shut down without interrupting a steady supply of electricity to keep the vehicle’s computers and communications devices working.

“This is an important first step as we evaluate the town’s fleet to ensure we are doing our part to achieve a zero-carbon footprint. Combined with the many efforts Yorktown took last year, we can be proud of our steady accomplishments,” said Supervisor Matt Slater.

The purchase of the Ford Police Interceptor is the latest environmental initiative in Yorktown. Yorktown’s recent green initiatives include:

  • The November approval of the installation of a solar panel array in the parking lot of the Granite Knolls Sports Complex.
  • The February approval of IBM’s solar panel canopy over a large parking lot at 1101 Kitchawan Road.
  • The September adoption of new laws regulating solar panel arrays and solar power storage devices.
  • The August agreement with Sustainable Westchester to educate residents about vetted solar-power enrollment opportunities.
  • A December energy credit purchase agreement with Lodestar Energy that will deliver solar-produced electricity to municipal buildings, reduce the town’s carbon footprint by 70% and save the town an estimated $30,000 a year.
