Yorktown Garbage Hauler Fined $59,500

Uncollected Garbage

July 20, 2023 – Yorktown fined its garbage hauler $59,500 for failing to properly collect household refuse and recycling in the first week of July.

Supervisor Tom Diana announced the fines at Tuesday’s Town Board meeting and he vowed that the fines will continue if the garbage hauler, Competitive Carting Corporation, does not comply with its contract.

“I understand your frustration…I have it as well. My garbage doesn’t get picked up on time,” said Supervisor Diana. “We’re all in the same boat folks, and were working to correct it.”

The Town refuse and recycling staff is documenting additional garbage-collection failures. Each weekday at 5 a.m., the department’s staff will drive along the previous day’s collection routes to determine how much garbage was uncollected.

The documentation is important because it will establish responsible grounds for terminating the contract if necessary.

Competitive Carting’s failure to collect refuse after the Independence Day holiday was the second major garbage disruption since they began serving Yorktown on January 1. Throughout January, Competitive Carting struggled to service Yorktown’s households.

The Town Board hired Competitive Carting in late 2022 to collect garbage after the Town’s previous trash hauler proposed a roughly $2 million increase to its contract. Over the course of the Town’s five-year contract with Competitive Carting, Town officials expected to save taxpayers $1.5 million.

Residents whose garbage was not collected should call Competitive Carting at 914-477-5865 or submit an email to their website, competitivecarting.com. If Competitive Carting does not respond, residents should contact the Town’s Refuse & Recycling Department, 914-245-4438.
