Yorktown Pop-up Vaccine Sites Inoculate 1,000

Yorktown, in partnership with Westchester County and Save Mor Drugs, successfully vaccinated about 1,000 residents last week through pop-up sites.

Last week, Westchester County vaccinated 720 people at the Albert A. Capellini Community and Cultural Center on March 8 and Save Mor Drugs of Croton-on-Hudson vaccinated another 250 Yorktown residents at Jefferson Village. Save Mor Drugs—whose owners are longtime Yorktown residents—also vaccinated another 100 people at the Beaveridge and Wynwood Oaks apartment complexes. Another 300 vaccines will be administered on Thursday.

“As we cross the one year anniversary of this terrible pandemic we once again showed how local and county officials can collaborate with each other and private-sector partners like Save Mor to vaccinate more than 1,000 people in a matter of days,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “But we’re not stopping there as this vaccine is the key to reopening our community and society safely for all.”

The pop-up sites are part of a state and county effort to bring vaccines to communities that lack easy access to mass vaccination sites like the Westchester County Center.

“What you are seeing here is another example of government at its best; multiple levels of government all working together to ensure that Westchester residents have access to this life saving vaccine after a year of enduring the largest challenge in many of our lifetimes,” said County Executive George Latimer. “Our Administration, through Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler, has spearheaded this pop-up vaccine site effort and I am grateful to the leadership in towns in the northern part of the County who helped to make this site come to fruition. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and through vaccinations we will get there.”

Local pharmacies that are administering the vaccine are receiving their supplies from the federal government.

“The vaccine is critical to get us back to normalcy and we are happy to partner with the Town of Yorktown to provide this service directly to residents,” said Yogi Kao of Save Mor Drugs.

Yorktown officials have helped residents find and travel to vaccine appointments through a volunteer sign-up sheet and a tutorial posted on the town’s web site.

"The Town of Yorktown was very pleased and proud to be able to assist and partner with Westchester County Executive George Latimer and his excellent staff along with the Westchester County Department of Health in the distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to our residents and those in surrounding communities," said Town Clerk Diana Quast. "We hope that we will be able to continue this partnership in order to reach as many people as possible.”
