NY Forward List of Potential Projects

  • K-Mart: Redevelopment (Commercial or Mixed Use) - the vacant Kmart building in the Yorktown Green Shopping Center would be demolished and replaced with a mixed-use retail/residential building under redevelopment plans presented to the Town Board in January 2022. The retail component includes 150 units—84 one-bedroom units and 66 two-bedroom units. Public input from Community Outreach proposed the increased need for Senior and Millennial housing options to retain and attract a diverse mixed age population. Suggested kids’ entertainment commercial spaces and/or department store to replace the vacant Kmart.

  • Roma Building: Redevelopment (Mixed-Use) – possible opportunities to upgrade the current structure with aesthetically pleasing architecture for ground level retail and housing on the upper level(s). Encouraging a more walkable main street addition to the downtown, as well as diversifying the community’s housing stock. Suggested trendy restaurants to fill vacant storefronts.

  • Soundview Preparatory School: Redevelopment (Mixed-Use) - a proposal has been put forward to build 165 residential units (80 condominium units and 85 rental apartments) and 20,000 square feet of retail/office space, which would occupy the existing main building on the site. Suggested walkable spaces, local restaurants, diversified housing options.

  • Boutique Hotel - a three-story hotel on the corner of Veterans Road and Commerce Street has been proposed. The legislation allows special permits for “boutique” hotels in Yorktown Heights Overlay District.

  • Connection between Empire State and Mohansic Trailways to FDR State Park – one of the downtown’s greatest assets are the 2 Trails. A connection between the 2 would provide safe, direct access from the Empire State Trail to the State Park for the use of many amenities including biking, hiking, fishing, boat rentals, playgrounds, fields and swimming.

  • Public Gathering Spaces – Create parklets with open seating to enjoy restaurants, shops and music and create a central public gathering space.

  • Albert C. Capellini Community & Cultural Center Improvements – Ideas gathered from community outreach include Branch Library, Information Center, Public Outdoor Gathering Areas and combination of certain town services located in one location for ease of public access, including Town Hall/Highway renovation.

  • Improvement Streetscapes –  Community outreach efforts garnered numerous suggestions for increased Walkability and dedicated Bike Lanes for safety and connectivity in the downtown.
