Four Children Win Yorktown Fishing Derby Awards

(May 19, 2022) — Yorktown gave awards to four children in the annual Fishing Derby.

The Fishing Derby at Sparkle Lake was held on May 14, and it attracted 20 contestants. Sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation, Town staff helped children brush up on their technique and provided small amounts of bait.

The winners were:

  • Charlie Slater: Largest catfish and smallest catfish (2 awards)
  • Liam Healy: Most fish caught and largest sunny (2 awards)
  • Landon Ferrara: Smallest sunny and largest bass (2 awards)
  • Egan O’Brien: Smallest bass

“Fishing is a great way for children to acquire an appreciation for the outdoors,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “This traditional sport also cultivates a sense of stewardship for our environment, so it was heartening to see so many young people in attendance.”

Bass fishing is a major sport in New York. Bassmaster Magazine cited four New York waterways among the nation’s top 25 bass fishing spots. The New York waterways are Lake Erie (#3); Lake Champlain (#11); St. Lawrence River (#12); and Oneida Lake (#18).
