Saturday 3/21 COVID-19 Update

From the Desk of Supervisor Matt Slater: COVID-19 Update

03/21/20 - Town government has maintained its pledge to continue to provide validated and accurate information to the residents of Yorktown.  At this time we have not received new data regarding COVID-19 in our community.  Statewide the number of confirmations continue to rise but that is in correlation with the increased number of tests.  In fact, the statistics presented by Governor Cuomo this morning show Westchester County’s numbers actually slowing down.

There have been rumors of additional cases of COVID-19 in our community.  To be clear, local government is not notified of any business which may be impacted by the virus nor do we notify individuals who may have been in contact with infected residents.  This is done by Westchester County’s Department of Health.

As a reminder, starting tomorrow at 8 PM, Governor Cuomo’s New York State on Pause goes into effect.  This means 100% New York State’s non-essential workforce must remain at home.  There is information on the Town of Yorktown website as to what is classified as essential and non-essential as well as the process to get approval from New York State to be declared an essential service.

Town government continues to function.  I announced last night that we will be freezing all non-essential spending in anticipation of the economic and financial impact this situation will surely have on our town budget.

Earlier today I joined Chief Robert Noble of the Yorktown Police Department and Captain Rick Davin of the Yorktown Volunteer Ambulance Corps at the new dropbox located in the courtyard of the Police Department and Couthouse.  Anyone with PPE (gloves, masks and gowns) are asked to donate these items for our frontliners and first responders.

Despite the need for donations we continue to search for innovative ways to produce needed equipment and provide services to those in need.  I spoke with the Governor’s office today about the potential of utilizing 3-D printers to produce needed facemasks.  This has been proposed in other parts of New York State and could potentially provide a method to mass produce masks for our first responders and frontliners.

Additionally, we are partnering with Yorktown Alliance for Safe Kids to offer a synthesized COVID-19 guide for residents to utilize.  Most importantly, it will provide great resources for those seeking mental health services during these challenging times.

We continue to urge everyone to remain at home unless absolutely necessary.  Our local restaurants continue to provide food on a take out or delivery basis and will continue to do so beyond Sunday’s implementation of New York State on Pause.

As always, stay safe, stay healthy and should any new validated and accurate information becomes available I will present it to the public.
