Yom Hashoa Proclamation

WHEREAS, from 1933 to 1945, nearly six million Jews were murdered in the Nazi-led Holocaust as part of a systematic program of genocide; and

WHEREAS, in addition to targeting Jews across Europe millions of other people perished as victims of Nazism; and

WHEREAS, those who fell under German control, especially Jews, were stripped of their rights and property; and

WHEREAS, nations across Europe lost a majority of the Jews living in their countries, especially places such as Poland, the Ukraine and Belarus; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Yorktown has hosted Holocaust Remembrance Ceremonies to honor those who perished by educating the living of the atrocities that took place; and

WHEREAS, the year 2020 marks the 87th anniversary of the beginning of the genocide of European Jews society has an obligation to honor their memory by continued education of younger generations; and

WHEREAS, Holocaust Remembrance Day, known in Hebrew as Yom Hashoah, is a day set aside for remembering the victims of the Holocaust and reminding citizens of the world the what can happen when hatred, bigotry and indifference become accepted societal policies; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, the Town of Yorktown pauses in its governmental deliberations to commemorate the observances of Yom Hashoah; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Town of Yorktown rededicates its belief in the principle of equal justice for all people; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Town of Yorktown reaffirms its commitment to fight all forms of hatred and anti-Semitism within our great community.
