Yorktown Appoints New Library Director

Yvonne Cech

The Town Board recently appointed Yvonne Cech director of the John. C. Hart Memorial Library.

“I’m thrilled to be back in my hometown and honored to be at the helm of the John C. Hart Memorial Library. It feels like I’ve come full circle in my career, back to where it all began,” said Cech. “I am very much looking forward to getting reacquainted with the community and helping to guide this historic library into the future.”

Cech, of Danbury, previously was the director of the Brookfield Library in Connecticut and before that, she was the director of the Croton Free Library in Croton-on-Hudson.

“Yvonne brings a wealth of experience and leadership to our library,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “I welcome her arrival and I am confident that her background will allow her to help our library and its patrons adapt to the changes in our society and the increasingly important need for fact-based information.”

Cech’s library career began as director of the English Language Library in Basel, Switzerland, where she lived for seven years with her husband Michael and their two children, Christopher and Ashley.

After returning to the states, Yvonne taught as a Library Media Specialist at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut for nearly a decade. In 2018, she received a national award from the American Library Association for Noble Librarians Faced with Adversity – given for courage and dedication during the deadly attack on Sandy Hook.

She received her Master’s in Library Science from Florida State University and holds a K-12 Teaching Certification from Southern Connecticut State University, with undergrad degrees from Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC and SUNY Oswego.
