Yorktown Launches Louisiana Relief Effort

Hurricane Ida Relief

The Town of Yorktown, the Alliance for Safe Kids and the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce launched a relief effort on Monday for residents of Louisiana harmed by Hurricane Ida.

Anyone interested in helping is encouraged to buy a gift card for any amount and bring it to Supervisor Matt Slater’s office by the end of day on Friday, September 3. Donations can also be made directly to Second Harvest Food Bank at www.no-hunger.org.

“We have seen the shocking news reports today of massive flooding in Louisiana,” said Supervisor Slater. “Nobody has to helplessly sit and watch this human tragedy unfold. We all can play a role in helping our fellow citizens recover from this tremendous loss.”

More than a million homes and businesses were without power Monday across a swath of Louisiana and Mississippi as Ida, downgraded from a Category 4 hurricane to a tropical storm, remained a danger with its heavy rains and storm surge.

Second Harvest facilities currently house more than 3,500 disaster-readiness boxes, including Abbott Disaster Boxes containing Pedialyte, Zone Nutrition Bars, Ensure and Pediasure. Year-round, the food bank also maintains hundreds of thousands of pounds of other supplies ready to go at a moment’s notice, including more than 150,000 bottles of water.

Along with non-perishable disaster food goods, the Second Harvest New Orleans and Lafayette operations also feature commercial-grade kitchens capable of producing more than 10,000 hot meals a day, along with the delivery infrastructure to make these meals possible to those most in need. The facilities have on hand as well 10,000 flash-frozen prepared disaster meals that can be rapidly heated for delivery or sent frozen to partners with the capability of heating on-site.
