Yorktown Library Suspends Indoor Service

Due to rising cases of COVID-19, the John C. Hart Memorial Library has closed to the public until further notice but will continue its outdoor service.

“After considering public safety and the health of our employees, the library’s Board of Trustees voted to suspend our indoor service that we resumed in September,” said Patricia Barresi, the library’s acting director. “Our staff will continue working in the building to ensure that our patrons have unhindered access to the library’s materials.”

The library at 1130 E. Main St. in Shrub Oak will offer outdoor Porch Pick-Up service six days a week. The schedule is:

  • Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Patrons must place their Porch Pick-up requests online or by calling the library in advance. When the requested items are ready, patrons will receive a text or email from the Westchester Library System.

As part of the library’s safety protocols, all items returned to the Library and Town Hall book drops are quarantined for at least 72 hours before they are handled. Items returned may take up to a week to vanish from patrons’ accounts. All items are recorded on the date they are returned, and no fines are incurred during the wait time. Patrons should wait at least one week after returning items to contact the library if items still appear on library accounts.

Last week Supervisor Matt Slater declared a state of emergency to address the rising number of Covid-19 cases in Yorktown.

“If we want to keep New York State from instituting more restrictions on our community we must reduce the spread,” said Supervisor Slater.  “This comes down to the same responsible choices the town has encouraged since March: wear a mask, stay six feet away from people, wash your hands and if you don't feel well stay home!”
