Yorktown Sewer Project Advances

(March 22, 2022)—The long-delayed improvement to a sewer district in the Town of Yorktown has taken a major step forward.

On Tuesday Westchester County announced that it will release $10 million in funds for the Hallocks Mill sewer extension in response to a new $1.2 million federal grant for the first phase of the project.

“The announcement from Rep. Mondaire Jones of a commitment of $1.2 million in federal infrastructure improvement funding for the project was welcome news and is all the more reason to at last put in place the New York City Department of Environmental Protection funding that is administered by Westchester County,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “We have worked closely with our colleagues in county government to assure that after 30 years, this major environmental quality improvement project moves forward.”

The federal money will be used for the first phase of the extension project, which consists of engineering design. The extension project will be paid with the $10 million from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s East of Hudson water quality improvement initiative. The Town plans on borrowing the balance upon the approval of the State Comptroller on the creation of the district.

“The federal government’s commitment of $1.2 million toward this end shows the priority placed on this remediation,” County Executive George Latimer said on Tuesday.

The Town of Yorktown is planning an extension of the Hallock’s Mill Sewer District that will provide service for 315 properties currently on septic systems. This $14.3 million project will dramatically improve the water quality of Sparkle Lake, a major recreational resource for town residents, as well as the Croton Reservoir which provides drinking water for millions of residents in the Metropolitan area.

The Hallocks Mill sewer extension is the first of three sewer district improvements that are planned, each of which will enhance the water quality and the overall environment for residents and those who utilize the Croton Watershed.
