Yorktown Library Installs Self-Checkout Stations

Yorktown library installs self-checkout stations

The John C. Hart Memorial Library has installed two self-checkout stations to expedite borrowing materials.

The new stations are in the main reading room and in the children’s section. The stations consist of a touch screen and scanner that reads barcodes on library materials.

“The initial idea was to enhance the patron experience in case there were long checkout lines, but with continuing concerns about Covid-19 the stations offer patrons a checkout that does not require interaction with library staff,” said library director Yvonne Cech. “Previously there was no way to check out books in the children’s department. This station allows children to opportunity to become independent with their library transactions.”

The self-checkout stations were possible through a $13,889 state bullet aid grant from Sen. Peter Harckham. The station in the main reading room was installed late last year, but a pandemic-related microchip shortage delayed the delivery of equipment and its installation in the children’s section until 10 days ago.

The library continues to observe social distancing protocols. All visitors to the library must wear a mask.
