Yorktown Volunteers Collect 650 Pounds of Litter

Volunteers representing 25 community groups collected about 650 pounds of roadside litter on Saturday during the Great Fall Litter Clean-up.

The groups targeted various areas of Yorktown where there are litter problems created by vehicle passengers who illegally discard their garbage by throwing out of their vehicle windows. By the end of Saturday, the groups collected 150 bags of litter.

“The Great Fall Litter Clean-Up is an outstanding example of civic pride and responsibility,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “The volunteers did not create the unsightly litter that blemishes our community, but through collective action they beautified Yorktown while reminding everyone that we all play a role in protecting our environment.”

The participating groups included the Yorktown Alliance for Kids, Westchester Youth Volunteers, Yorktown Lions Club, and the Huntersville Association.

The Clean-up is Yorktown’s latest effort to address litter and raise awareness. In March, the Town Board issued a letter to commercial property owners reminding them that everyone plays a role in eliminating blight by properly maintaining properties.
