Yorktown Youth Council Concludes Inaugural Project

Youth Council Cereal Drive

November 23, 2022 – The Supervisor’s Youth Council recently concluded its inaugural project—a cereal collection drive that supports local food pantries.

In partnership with the Yorktown Alliance for Safe Kids, the new youth council is a platform for young people to share their ideas and perspectives with the Town’s leadership. The cereal drive concluded November 18, and it collected more than 100 boxes of cereal.

“This youth council is an important opportunity for young people to engage in community projects and have their say,” said Supervisor Matt Slater. “I’m looking forward to receiving new ideas and feedback from these young leaders.”

The collection drive benefited the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown Food Pantry and the Community Food Pantry at St Mary's Mohegan Lake. On the weekend of November 19, the two pantries served more than 500 families.

The youth council’s next meeting is on December 14 at the Jefferson Valley Mall. The young people will meet with representatives from the Yorktown Chamber of Commerce to discuss planning a teen job fair.

Young people interested in joining the council can sign up on the Town’s website.
